The Government of India through its “Khelo India” is trying to revive and improve the sports culture in the country. Sports not only builds the body but also brings discipline, resilience, and confidence among the players. Sports, especially wrestling, were also close to my father, later Sri M Mukesh Goud’s heart. Malla Yuddha was a befitting tribute to my father and a way to further the government’s vision to promote sports in the country. I am happy that through, Sreshth Foundation, we were able to organize Malla Yuddha on a grand scale where more than 650 wrestlers from the entire Telangana. I was also delighted to see that there was fair participation from girls and hope that we see greater or more participation from girls in these sports in the years to come. Sreshth Foundation has also taken up other programmes like strengthening Anganvadis, WASH (Water, Sanitation, Health & Hygiene) for girls’ schools, digital literacy for students and community and, science labs for government schools. I am thankful to all the benefactors who came forward to support Malla Yuddha as well as all other activities of Sreshth Foundation. Sreshth Foundation is a firm believer of nation building and we hope to reach out to enhance our work across geographies as well as across various target groups.

Malla Yuddha Reviving an ancient sport

Sports is known to not only improve physical health but is also an activity that builds personality by inculcating skills and values like leadership, team spirit, resilience, endurance, discipline, and respect. “Malla Yuddha” is the traditional form of combat-wrestling originating in India. It is closely related to Southeast Asian wrestling styles such as ‘Naban’ and is one of the two ancestors of ‘Kushti’. Indian wrestling is described in the 13th century ‘Malla Purana’.

Sreshth Foundation, with this objective in mind, organized ‘4-day Shri Mukesh Goud Memorial Sports Championships’ to promote an ancient Indian sport, Malla-Yuddha. Malla Yuddha Championship The championship was held for the first time in India at Hyderabad, Telangana in memory of late Shri Mukesh Goud, former minister in the Government of Andhra Pradesh and, also an avid wrestler himself. He was a great supporter of sporting events, especially wrestling. Shri Vikram Goud, Founder, Sreshth Foundation and BJP Youth leader from Hyderabad decided to host the championships to promote and revive this ancient sport in the city. Malla Yuddha is barely practiced today, and this championship was organized in a hope that youth will take up this sport for all round body and mind development. The success of this event is hoped to be replicated in other Indian states within the framework of the Central Government’s ‘Khelo India’ programme, which has been introduced to revive sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.
